Operating Hours of the South Tower
The South Tower is open daily from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.. Access is via a
343-step staircase. Last entry may vary depending on season and conditions.
What to Expect During the Climb
The ascent is entirely on foot and includes steep, narrow spiral staircases typical of Gothic towers.
Along the way, small openings reveal glimpses of Vienna’s streets and squares. At the top, you reach an
elevated viewing area that offers some of the finest city-center panoramas in Vienna.
- A historic spiral staircase and authentic Gothic tower interior
- Close-up views of the cathedral’s stone detailing and vertical structure
- Panoramic perspectives over the Inner City and surrounding landscapes
- A unique sense of height that modern observation decks rarely replicate
Special Highlights
- Medieval engineering: a masterwork of Gothic construction completed long before modern machinery.
- One of Vienna’s best views: an elevated vantage point directly above the historic center.
- A true climb: the experience feels earned, making the view at the top even more memorable.
Historical Significance
For centuries, the South Tower served more than an architectural purpose—it functioned as a civic lookout.
Watchmen once used it to spot fires and threats, helping protect the city below. Over time, the Steffl became
a symbol of Vienna’s identity: a vertical statement of craftsmanship, faith, and civic pride that has endured
through sieges, wars, and the city’s modern transformation.
Architecture and Design
The South Tower embodies High Gothic design, emphasizing verticality through pointed arches, stone tracery,
and carefully proportioned detailing. Its sculptural ornamentation and structural elegance reveal the precision
of medieval stonemasons, while its height and silhouette remain a benchmark of Gothic tower architecture in
Central Europe.
