Visit Vienna In November

Updated Date : 03 November 2026

Vienna in November · 2026 travel guide

Vienna in November brings palace visits, long coffeehouse breaks and the first Christmas markets of the season. The important detail is your arrival date: the beginning of the month and the final week offer noticeably different trips.

Come early for the city itself: St. Stephen’s Cathedral, imperial courtyards, music and evening views. Come later if you want those same attractions with market stalls and hot punch afterwards. You can enjoy either version without spending every day outside in the cold.

Shorter days leave plenty of time to enjoy Vienna’s evening skyline.

The November detail that changes your plans: Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz markets open on 6 November 2026. Rathausplatz follows on 13 November, while the Prater Winter Market starts on 20 November. Build your evenings around the markets operating during your stay.

Is November a Good Time to Visit Vienna?

Yes, especially if your ideal city break mixes sightseeing with food, music and atmospheric evenings. November suits travelers who enjoy a palace interior as much as a scenic walk. It is less suited to a trip built entirely around long outdoor days or the expectation of snow.

For a first visit with Christmas markets, aim for 20 November onwards. For a visit centered on attractions, an earlier stay also works well. The trade-off is that several festive stops will still be setting up.

1–5 November

A city break before the main markets

Make the Old Town, Schönbrunn Palace and indoor experiences your main attractions. The major markets listed below have not opened yet, so keep your evenings for dinner, music or a short walk past illuminated buildings.

6–12 November

The first festive evenings

Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz become useful market stops. Combine the palace with its forecourt market, or finish an Old Town afternoon beside the cathedral. Rathausplatz is still to come.

13–19 November

More neighborhoods join in

Rathausplatz, Am Hof, Karlsplatz and Spittelberg open on 13 November; Freyung follows on 14 November. Choose one area for the evening instead of crossing the city between markets.

20–30 November

The widest festive choice

The Prater Winter Market, Belvedere and Maria-Theresien-Platz join the earlier openings. This is our preferred part of November for combining a first Vienna visit with several different market settings.

Vienna Weather in November: What to Expect

Vienna’s long-term November averages are approximately 9°C during the day and 4°C at night. These rounded figures come from 1991–2020 measurements at Vienna’s Hohe Warte station; they describe the climate, rather than the forecast for your trip.

Prepare for cold air, possible rain and wind that can make an open square feel colder than a sheltered lane. Snow is possible, but a snowy city should be a bonus rather than the reason you book. Leave your longer garden walks for daylight and use the evening for a market, dinner or an indoor experience.

What to Wear in Vienna in November

  • A warm outer layer: choose a coat that also handles wind and light rain.
  • Layers underneath: a sweater over a lighter top makes the move into cafés and attractions more comfortable.
  • Comfortable, water-resistant shoes: useful for damp paving, palace paths and standing at stalls.
  • A scarf, gloves and a small umbrella: easy to carry and useful when a brief evening stroll becomes a longer one.
  • A compact bag: keep your phone and tickets accessible while leaving your hands free.

Check the forecast shortly before departure. A mild afternoon and a wet, windy evening can call for different plans, even within the same visit.

The Best Things to Do in Vienna in November

A satisfying November day has a little contrast: an outdoor landmark, something absorbing indoors, then a proper break. These attractions work especially well with that rhythm.

1. Explore Schönbrunn Palace, Then Stay for the Forecourt

Schönbrunn gives you a strong reason to leave the center, even on a gray day. Begin with the palace interior, take a manageable walk through the main park and, from 6 November, return to the forecourt for the Christmas market. Keeping these experiences together avoids a second journey across Vienna.

The State Apartments with an audio guide are included with Vienna E-pass. Follow the customer-panel instructions and print the required voucher before arriving. The inclusion covers the named State Apartments visit; other palace tours and separately ticketed garden attractions have their own admission arrangements.

A useful seasonal detail: the main palace park is free during opening hours and closes at 17:30 in November. The fountains do not operate from mid-October to mid-April. You can still appreciate the Neptune Fountain’s setting, but photographs of running fountains show a different season.

2. Give the Old Town Your Best Daylight

Start outside St. Stephen’s Cathedral and walk towards Graben, Kohlmarkt and Michaelerplatz. Look up at the roof patterns, shopfronts and upper floors; much of the pleasure is in the streets between the landmarks. Leave room for a detour when a courtyard or pastry-shop window catches your attention.

Keep this walk flexible. On a pleasant day, continue through the Hofburg courtyards. If the weather turns, shorten the loop and use a nearby indoor stop. From 6 November, the Stephansplatz market gives you a festive ending without another cross-city journey.

3. Step Into Vienna’s Story at Time Travel

Time Travel Vienna is a compact indoor experience on Habsburgergasse, convenient for an Old Town day. Its multimedia scenes and effects introduce the city’s past in an entertaining format. Allow around 50 minutes for the experience, with extra time for arrival.

It is included with Vienna E-pass, and a reservation is required through the customer panel. Book around your walk so you can step inside at a planned time. Some scenes are dark, loud or intense; consider that when visiting with younger children or anyone sensitive to effects.

4. Experience Mozart Through Music, Light and Projection

Mythos Mozart makes an atmospheric indoor stop on Kärntner Straße. Immersive rooms use music and projections to draw you into the composer’s world. It works well as a late-afternoon change of pace after walking the center, particularly when you would prefer an experience to another outdoor stop.

Allow approximately an hour. Mythos Mozart is included with Vienna E-pass; generate the attraction’s QR code in your customer panel and follow its current entry instructions. You do not need a background in classical music to enjoy the presentation.

5. See the City From the Giant Ferris Wheel

The Wiener Riesenrad is a good reason to visit Prater in November. Choose a clear spell for views over the rooftops, or arrive around dusk for the change from daylight to city lights. Visibility matters more than choosing an exact photo time.

The standard Giant Ferris Wheel ride is included with Vienna E-pass. From 20 November, combine it with the Winter Market at Riesenradplatz. Other Prater rides have individual winter schedules, so choose your main attraction before setting out rather than assuming the whole amusement park will be operating.

6. Make the Coffeehouse Break Part of the Visit

A coffeehouse is a place to settle into the city for a while. Order a Melange if you enjoy coffee with milk, or choose tea or hot chocolate, then add Apfelstrudel or a slice of cake. A savory lunch can be more welcome than a second sweet snack after market browsing.

Choose somewhere near the area you are already exploring. If a famous café has a long queue, a welcoming alternative nearby may give you a more relaxed afternoon. Sit down before you are exhausted and leave enough room in the day to enjoy being there.

When Do Vienna’s Christmas Markets Open in November 2026?

Openings are staggered. Use this calendar to match your visit dates to a convenient area, then choose one main market for each evening.

Selected Christmas market opening dates for November 2026
Market Opens
Schönbrunn Palace 6 November
Stephansplatz 6 November
Rathausplatz 13 November
Am Hof, Karlsplatz and Spittelberg 13 November
Freyung 14 November
Prater Winter Market at Riesenradplatz 20 November
Belvedere and Maria-Theresien-Platz 20 November

Dates checked on 2 November 2026. Schedules can change; reconfirm the market you plan to visit shortly before your trip.

For a first festive evening, choose Rathausplatz for its City Hall backdrop. For a market attached to a major attraction, choose Schönbrunn. For a compact Old Town stop, choose Stephansplatz. After 20 November, Riesenradplatz pairs naturally with the Ferris wheel.

Try roasted chestnuts or a warm snack, and choose an alcohol-free punch if you prefer. Keep a market visit unhurried: browse a few craft stalls, find something you actually want to eat and enjoy the setting.

Four Easy Vienna Walks for November

Each route stays within one area. The Google Maps links provide walking directions between the stops; attraction entry and time spent inside are separate. Shorten a walk whenever the weather or your energy calls for it.

Walk 1: Old Town With Indoor Stops

Stephansplatz → Graben → Time Travel Vienna → Michaelerplatz → Mythos Mozart

Use daylight for the cathedral exterior and central streets. Choose Time Travel, Mythos Mozart or both, with lunch between them rather than consecutive bookings. From 6 November, visit the Stephansplatz market before starting the loop or return later.

Best for: a first visit, a mixed-weather day and travelers staying in the center.

Walk 2: Imperial Squares and Market Evenings

Heldenplatz → Volksgarten → Rathausplatz → Freyung → Am Hof

Begin with the open views around the Hofburg, then cross Volksgarten during daylight. Continue to City Hall and the smaller Old Town squares. For all three market stops, choose 14 November or later; earlier in the month, enjoy the architecture and finish in a café.

Best for: imperial scenery and a late-afternoon walk that leads into an evening out.

Walk 3: Schönbrunn Palace and Its Seasonal Market

Schönbrunn U-Bahn station → palace → Neptune Fountain → palace forecourt → station

Fit the park section around your palace entry time and finish the garden walk before closing. Return to the forecourt for the market from 6 November. The route keeps to the lower park; the uphill walk to the Gloriette is an optional addition when conditions suit you.

Best for: a palace day with an easy seasonal ending.

Walk 4: Prater at Dusk

Praterstern → Giant Ferris Wheel → Riesenradplatz → Praterstern

Keep this outing short and relaxed. Ride the wheel when visibility is good, then linger around Riesenradplatz. From 20 November, add the Winter Market before returning to the station. The nearby planetarium building is a useful meeting landmark; entry is not part of this walk.

Best for: couples, families and an evening centered on one memorable attraction.

Small Choices That Make a November Visit Better

  • Use daylight for outdoor priorities. See palace grounds and architectural details before settling into indoor experiences and evening stops.
  • Keep one area as your base each day. Schönbrunn, the Old Town and Prater each work better as a focused outing than as stops on a rushed cross-city checklist.
  • Save your directions before leaving Wi-Fi. Keep your attraction confirmations accessible too, and arrange any printed voucher in advance.
  • Keep an indoor alternative near your walk. A reserved experience or a café gives a wet afternoon somewhere comfortable to go.
  • Check final entry times. An attraction’s closing time does not necessarily mean you can arrive at that time and still enter.
  • Leave room for dinner. Market browsing, standing outside and a few snacks can still leave you wanting a warm seat and a proper meal.

Bring Vienna’s Attractions Into Your November Trip

Schönbrunn’s State Apartments, Time Travel Vienna, Mythos Mozart and the Giant Ferris Wheel give you four different ways to experience the city with Vienna E-pass. Choose the visits you are most excited about, then leave space around them for walks, cafés and seasonal markets.

Follow each attraction’s entry instructions in your customer panel: Time Travel requires a reservation, and the State Apartments require a printed voucher. Market purchases, food and drinks are separate from the attraction inclusions described here.
