Christmas in Vienna 2026 · December 24, 25 and 26
A Christmas in Vienna you can enjoy from your first museum to your last festive dinner.
Plan around the places that open, the meals worth reserving and the markets that continue after Christmas Eve. This guide brings the holiday dates, published schedules and practical decisions together in one place.
Vienna is worth visiting over Christmas. Several major attractions and Christmas markets open on December 24, 25 and 26, but each day needs its own plan. Christmas Eve brings early closures; Christmas Day and December 26 are public holidays. Reserve important meals, buy essentials ahead and choose attractions using their holiday calendars.
December 24 · Thursday
Start early
Give the morning to sightseeing and shopping. Have your evening meal arranged.
December 25 · Friday
Choose the right attraction
Some museums close; the main ALBERTINA publishes opening until 21:00.
December 26 · Saturday
A holiday, not a normal Saturday
Plan culture and the remaining markets rather than ordinary retail shopping.
December 27 · Sunday
Keep supplies in mind
Most ordinary shops remain closed, extending the holiday shopping gap.
Checked on October 19, 2026. Hours below reflect operators' published Christmas schedules or stated daily and seasonal opening rules. They are planning references, not live availability. Recheck your chosen date before booking; last admission, timed tickets, restaurant reservations and individual facilities can follow separate arrangements.
Use this guide to plan the Christmas holidays themselves. Our Christmas markets in Vienna guide covers the wider Advent season and market selection. If you are using Vienna E-pass, choose your included visits around the actual holiday opening and entry instructions.
Christmas in Vienna 2026: The Dates That Matter
Austria's main family celebration is on Christmas Eve, December 24. That helps explain why the evening can feel quieter than a visitor expects, even after a lively morning of markets and sightseeing.
Thursday, December 24: Christmas Eve
Expect shorter opening at many businesses and attractions. Complete essential shopping early, select one morning visit and leave time to return to your hotel before dinner. A restaurant's ordinary Thursday timetable is insufficient confirmation for this evening.
Friday, December 25: Christmas Day
This is a public holiday. Ordinary retail is generally closed, but there are useful sightseeing options. Compare the individual calendars below: the Natural History Museum closes, while Schönbrunn and selected art museums welcome visitors.
Saturday, December 26: St. Stephen's Day
Stefanitag is also a public holiday, sometimes called Boxing Day in English travel searches. Do not assign it a normal Saturday shopping plan. It is a good date for a confirmed museum visit and markets whose seasons finish that evening.
Sunday, December 27: The extra closure day
In 2026, Sunday follows the two public holidays. Most ordinary shops therefore do not reopen immediately after December 26. Wednesday, December 23 is a sensible day for a full grocery shop; use Christmas Eve only for the purchases its shorter hours allow.
Choose your travel dates according to what you most want to experience. Arriving before December 24 gives you more of the Advent-market selection. Staying through the holidays can work well for palaces, selected museums, music and a slower city break, provided you organize meals and supplies.
What Is Open in Vienna on Christmas Day and Christmas Eve?
These five options provide different kinds of holiday sightseeing. The schedules belong to the named attraction, not every museum nearby or every building sharing the same brand. Suggested visit lengths are estimates, excluding travel, queues and meal breaks.
Central art visit · Albertinaplatz
ALBERTINA Museum
December 24: 10:00–14:00.
December 25: 10:00–21:00.
December 26: 10:00–18:00.
The main ALBERTINA is a useful anchor for a central Christmas itinerary. Give yourself around two hours for the exhibitions that interest you, then continue to lunch or a walk through the inner city.
The late opening on December 25 can also suit an afternoon visit before a later dinner. Choose the exhibition first and allow enough time to enjoy it; a 21:00 closing is a flexible option, not a reason to arrive at the end of the evening.
A separate museum · Karlsplatz
ALBERTINA MODERN
December 24: 10:00–14:00.
December 25: 10:00–18:00.
December 26: 10:00–18:00.
Consider this venue when its exhibition program matches your interests. It has a different location and holiday timetable from the main ALBERTINA. In particular, the main museum's 21:00 Christmas Day opening does not apply here.
Plan around one exhibition and a nearby meal, with roughly 1.5–2 hours for a focused visit. Confirm that your ticket covers the building you intend to enter.
Imperial interiors and a market in the same area
Schönbrunn Palace
December 24: 08:30–17:00.
December 25: 08:30–17:30.
December 26: 08:30–17:30.
The palace's published winter calendar includes daily opening and an extended holiday period from December 25. The operator lists last admission 45 minutes before closing. Your ticketed route or guided experience can have additional timing requirements.
Choose the interior experience you want, then add the forecourt market and a garden walk as time and weather allow. Our Schönbrunn Palace guide explains the visit options.
The palace, zoo, park and Christmas market have separate schedules. On December 24, for example, the market closes at 16:00 even though the palace's published closing time is later.
Dinosaurs, minerals and natural history
Natural History Museum Vienna
December 24: 09:00–15:00.
December 25: Closed.
December 26: 09:00–18:00.
The Naturhistorisches Museum publishes a specific 2026 Christmas closure on December 25. Put this visit on Christmas Eve morning or December 26 instead. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
Allow two to three hours, choosing the subjects your group most wants to see. General admission is free for visitors under 19; special activities can have separate conditions. Check current gallery notices if one display is your main reason for visiting.
Outdoor family option · Schönbrunn estate
Schönbrunn Zoo
December 24, 25 and 26: The published daily December schedule is 09:00–16:30, including public holidays.
Last admission: 16:00.
The zoo states that it opens 365 days a year. Plan a morning or early-afternoon visit with time for warm breaks. Some animal houses close before the zoo grounds, so do not leave your most important exhibits until the final minutes.
For a family trip, the zoo can be your main attraction for the day. Add a shorter market stop afterward rather than expecting children to manage extensive palace sightseeing, the zoo and a long evening outing consecutively.
Another Christmas Day closure: Wien Museum Karlsplatz lists December 25 among its closure dates. Its normally free permanent exhibition is therefore not a Christmas Day fallback. For any additional museum, check that venue's own holiday calendar.
Which Vienna Christmas Markets Are Open on December 24–26?
Several markets continue through Christmas, but their final dates and holiday hours differ. These four choices help you build a route without assuming that every Advent market is still trading.
City Hall Square
Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt
December 24: 10:00–18:30.
December 25 and 26: 10:00–22:00.
Final market day: December 26.
A central choice for a festive afternoon or evening. The ice-skating event has a longer season than the market itself, so distinguish the two when planning a later visit.
Palace forecourt
Schönbrunn Christmas Market
December 24: 10:00–16:00.
December 25 and 26: 10:00–19:00.
Season continues until: January 6, 2027.
Combine it with one attraction on the estate. A morning palace visit and a market stop make a more comfortable plan than repeatedly traveling between Schönbrunn and the centre.
Historic centre
Stephansplatz Christmas Village
December 24: 11:00–16:00.
December 25 and 26: 11:00–19:00.
Final market day: December 26.
Useful for a shorter stop during an inner-city walk. Leave time to enjoy the square, and treat cathedral sightseeing as a separate visit with separate access arrangements.
Prater and Leopoldstadt
Winter Market at Riesenradplatz
December 24: 11:00–17:00.
December 25 and 26: 11:00–22:00.
Season continues until: January 6, 2027.
A useful winter outing for families and visitors staying nearby. Individual rides and attractions keep their own hours and can depend on weather; the market schedule does not open every Prater ride.
Markets to visit earlier: Freyung, Am Hof, Art Advent at Karlsplatz, Spittelberg and the University Campus market are listed as finishing on December 23, 2026. Do not place them in a December 24–26 itinerary.
For the Prater's attractions and winter distinctions, see our Prater visitor guide. For a wider comparison of the markets, use the complete Vienna Christmas markets guide.
Christmas Dinner in Vienna: Published 2026 Options
Reserve your most important holiday meal before filling the rest of the evening. Christmas Eve deserves particular attention because local families celebrate that night and ordinary restaurant schedules can change.
These two published offers illustrate different budgets and styles. Prices are per person and were checked on October 19, 2026. An advertised menu does not confirm that a table remains available.
Hauptbahnhof area · Four-course menu
Frannys at Hotel Zeitgeist Vienna
Location: Sonnwendgasse 15, 1100 Vienna.
December 24: €52.
December 25 and 26: €50.
The hotel publishes four-course Christmas menus on all three dates, with a vegetarian main-course alternative. It asks for reservations at least three days in advance; book earlier if this meal is central to your plans.
Confirm the seating time, drinks, dietary requirements and cancellation terms with the restaurant. Its location is convenient to consider when staying around Hauptbahnhof.
Near the State Opera · Formal celebration
Hotel Sacher Vienna
December 24: Five-course festive menu, €445.
December 25: Four-course festive menu, €325.
The published prices include wine pairings and accompanying beverages. The Christmas Eve offer lists arrival and reservations between 18:00 and 19:30, with dinner finishing at 22:00.
This is a substantial dining commitment. Confirm the specific venue within the hotel, menu, seating and reservation conditions when booking, including arrangements for children or guests who do not drink alcohol.
Make the reservation useful for the whole day
Save the address, confirmed arrival time and booking conditions. Leave room to return to your accommodation and change if you want to, then allow for the journey to dinner. Finishing an outdoor market visit immediately before a formal meal can leave little margin.
For a smaller budget, look for a restaurant explicitly confirming service on your date and ask whether its normal menu or a set menu applies. The examples above are individual offers, not a citywide Christmas dinner price.
Our Vienna dining guide helps you choose between traditional restaurants, cafés and casual settings for the rest of your stay.
Christmas Services, Concerts and Evening Plans
A service or concert can be a meaningful part of Christmas in Vienna, but it needs its own planning. A church's daytime sightseeing schedule, a concert program and a Christmas service are three different things.
If you want to attend a church service
Use the parish's published Christmas program for your exact date. Check arrival guidance and any seating arrangements. During worship, follow the congregation's conduct and leave sightseeing photographs and movement around the building for another time.
Do not assume that an attraction ticket includes a service, a concert, a tower visit or the catacombs. Special liturgies can also interrupt ordinary tourist visiting windows.
If you prefer a concert or performance
Choose the performance before arranging dinner. Verify the date, venue, start time and duration, then decide whether your meal works better before or afterward. A concert elsewhere in the same palace or complex does not necessarily include daytime museum access.
Our Vienna classical music and opera guide explains the different experiences. Holiday programs and seats need checking for the specific performance you want.
A Practical Vienna Christmas Itinerary for December 24–26
The following plan groups visits geographically and gives each day one main focus. Times are pacing suggestions, not confirmed admission slots. Adapt them to your actual bookings, walking pace, accommodation and weather.
Thursday, December 24 · Stay central
Art in the morning, the Old Town after lunch
Before 10:00 · Breakfast and essential purchases
Have breakfast and finish any necessary shopping using the shop's actual Christmas Eve hours. Do not leave essential food purchases until after the afternoon market.
10:00–12:00 · Main ALBERTINA Museum
Choose a focused exhibition visit within the museum's 10:00–14:00 window. Leave time for coats and the exit before lunch.
12:15 onward · Lunch and Stephansplatz
Eat in the centre, then walk along Kärntner Straße toward Stephansplatz. Enjoy the market before its 16:00 closing. A stroll through nearby Graben can follow if you have time and feel comfortable outdoors.
Late afternoon · Return and prepare for dinner
Keep this part of the day flexible. A rest and time to change can be more useful than squeezing in another attraction as businesses wind down.
Evening · Your reserved meal or service
Follow the confirmed booking or parish program. Check the return journey before setting off and keep the evening free from competing timed plans.
Friday, December 25 · Schönbrunn area
One major visit, a palace backdrop and a relaxed lunch
Morning · Your chosen palace admission
Build the morning around the interior experience you booked. Account for entry procedures and travel from your hotel rather than treating the palace's opening time as your guaranteed admission time.
Late morning · Christmas market
The market opens at 10:00. Browse at a comfortable pace, enjoy a warm drink and choose whether a short garden walk suits the weather.
Lunch · A confirmed meal nearby
Arrange lunch around the estate or Hietzing, or plan the return journey to a restaurant in the centre. Avoid adding an unconfirmed cross-city meal between two fixed bookings.
Afternoon and evening · Keep one optional addition
Continue enjoying the area or return for a café and rest. For families who prefer animals, make the zoo the main morning attraction in place of extensive palace sightseeing.
Central alternative: if you prefer to remain in the inner city on December 25, choose the main ALBERTINA and a market stop instead. Its later opening provides flexibility around a reserved lunch or dinner.
Saturday, December 26 · Museums and final market visits
Natural history followed by Rathausplatz
09:00–12:00 · Natural History Museum
Visit the museum on the day it is open again after Christmas Day. Prioritize the collections your group wants to see, especially with children.
Lunch · Take a proper break
Eat around the museum quarter or along your onward route. A seated break makes the afternoon more enjoyable than continuing straight from a large museum into several hours outdoors.
Afternoon · Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt
Enjoy the market on its final scheduled day. The walk from the museum area passes major Ringstrasse landmarks, so you can make the journey part of the outing.
Evening · Dinner or a comfortable departure
If you are leaving, shorten the market stop and allow time to collect bags and reach your train or airport transfer. If staying, remember that the following day is Sunday.
Christmas in Vienna with Children or a Smaller Budget
Give children one main experience
A morning with dinosaurs or animals, lunch and a short market visit can be enough for a memorable day. Keep familiar snacks available and alternate outdoor time with somewhere warm to sit.
Choose the zoo when animals are the priority, and the Natural History Museum on a date when it opens. Rides, skating and special workshops may involve separate tickets or reservations.
Use free outdoor highlights thoughtfully
Landmark exteriors, festive streets and a stroll through the main Schönbrunn park can reduce admission spending. The park's published November–December hours are 06:30–17:30; special attractions and palace interiors require their own admission.
Keep garden walks in daylight and preserve money for a warm meal. Free outdoor sightseeing becomes less enjoyable when the group is cold and has nowhere planned to take a break.
Compare the actual ages and ticket products
The Natural History Museum publishes free general admission for under-19s. Schönbrunn Zoo lists free entry for under-6s and a child/youth tariff for ages 6–18. These are different age rules, so use your children's actual ages when calculating costs.
As a current standard-price example, two adult zoo tickets at €29 and two tickets for children aged eight and ten at €17 total €92, before transport, food or any applicable pass benefit. Compare the visit your family will actually make rather than assuming one family price applies across Vienna.
Winter Comfort: Plan for Warm Breaks and Changing Weather
Organize each day so you can move between outdoor atmosphere and indoor comfort. Warm layers, weather-resistant shoes, gloves and a compact bag are useful when the itinerary includes markets and walking.
Do your longer garden or zoo walks in daylight. Keep an indoor alternative in the same area if conditions deteriorate, while remembering that Christmas closures still apply to that backup.
For a wet afternoon on December 25, for example, the main ALBERTINA's published late opening offers more flexibility than a plan built around an unavailable museum. On Christmas Eve, earlier indoor closing times make the morning particularly valuable.
A snowy Christmas cannot be promised. Choose a trip you would enjoy with clear streets, rain or cold weather too: art, food, music and the city's architecture remain strong reasons to visit.
Transport, Arrival and Where to Stay over Christmas
Public transport continues during the holidays, but plan with the timetable for your exact date and time. Christmas Eve can have special arrangements, while public-holiday patterns and planned works affect individual routes. Recheck your journey close to travel.
A supermarket closing time is not a transport timetable, and a daytime connection does not establish how you will get back after an evening service or dinner. Save the return route before leaving your accommodation.
If you arrive on December 24 or 25
Confirm hotel check-in or apartment access, breakfast arrangements and your first meal before traveling. If landing late, choose dinner according to the time you can realistically reach the city, including baggage reclaim and the final transfer to your accommodation.
Use our Vienna Airport to city-centre guide for route selection. Add enough margin before a fixed dinner or attraction booking; the scheduled flight arrival is only the start of reaching your hotel.
Choose accommodation around your holiday priorities
Look for a useful transport connection, clear holiday reception arrangements and a food option you can rely on. A room with breakfast or an apartment stocked before the closures can make the morning easier. Location matters most in relation to the experiences you have actually booked.
Visiting Vienna after December 26
December 26 is the final scheduled market day at Rathausplatz and Stephansplatz in 2026. Schönbrunn's market and the Prater Winter Market continue until January 6, 2027, so a later visit still has seasonal options.
Rathausplatz's skating event has its own season beyond the market. Check its admission and opening arrangements separately rather than assuming the entire square closes when the market huts finish trading.
For December 27, use a Sunday plan. From December 28, reassess your preferred shops and museum calendars rather than carrying the Christmas Day timetable into every later date. If your trip extends through December 31, our New Year's Eve in Vienna guide covers that separate celebration.
Plan Your Christmas Sightseeing with Vienna E-pass
Begin with the holiday dates and experiences your group wants. Then compare the relevant paid visits with the current Vienna E-pass selection. The pass can be useful when included attractions fit the itinerary you can comfortably complete.
Check the entry instructions for each experience before choosing a time. Guided tours, palace routes, timed admissions and voucher requirements still apply during the holidays. General building opening does not confirm that every included tour departs on December 24, 25 or 26.
Keep restaurant reservations, market purchases, ordinary transport fares and any separate activities in your budget. Use the Vienna E-pass step-by-step guide to prepare the required tickets or bookings before arrival.
Give your Christmas plans a comfortable shape
Choose one main visit each day, arrange the meals that matter and leave time for the city between bookings. Explore the included experiences that match your Christmas stay.
