Pandas, palace gardens and a day worth taking slowly
Make Schönbrunn Zoo a highlight of your Vienna trip.
Watch the pandas, explore animal habitats and pause beneath the trees in the grounds of Vienna's imperial summer residence. A rewarding zoo day starts with a few good choices: the right entrance, enough time and a route shaped around what you most want to see.
Schönbrunn Zoo, also called Tiergarten Schönbrunn or Vienna Zoo, is in the Schönbrunn Palace grounds. Allow about three to four hours for a first visit, use U4 Hietzing for the main entrance and check the seasonal closing time before setting off. Standard admission is currently €29 for adults and €17 for children aged 6–18; children under six enter free.
Its appeal extends well beyond a quick stop for the giant pandas. Historic architecture, penguins, orangutans, polar-bear viewing areas and quieter animal encounters make it a substantial visit. Choose a few priorities, include a proper break and leave room to stay longer at an enclosure that catches your attention.

Is Schönbrunn Zoo Worth Visiting?
Schönbrunn Zoo is a strong choice when you enjoy animals, want a varied day outdoors or are traveling with children who need a change from palace interiors. It also suits adults who would happily spend time watching one species rather than moving quickly between landmarks.
The setting gives it a character of its own. The zoo traces its beginnings to 1752, when Emperor Francis I Stephen visited the imperial menagerie with guests. Its central pavilion and historic layout still connect the animal experience with Schönbrunn's courtly past.
That history is worth noticing during the visit. Look up from the map, take in the pavilion and allow the surroundings to become part of the day. The zoo's conservation and breeding work adds another layer to what you see in the habitats.
Make it a priority
You want animals and time to observe
Give the zoo a proper half-day when it is one of your main Vienna interests. Families can add play and food stops without sacrificing every pause to the next attraction.
Choose according to your interests
Your Vienna time is very limited
If palaces, painting or classical music matter more to you, protect those experiences first. A zoo visit uses a meaningful part of the day, including travel and walking.
For broader family planning, our guide to Vienna with kids helps you balance animal attractions, museums and lighter activities across the trip.
Schönbrunn Zoo Tickets: Prices and Family Costs
Start with the admission each person actually needs. The zoo's current standard day prices are €29 for an adult, €17 for ages 6–18 and free admission for children under six. Bring suitable proof of age for reduced admission.
These are the zoo's own age categories. If you are comparing a sightseeing pass or a combination product, read that product's categories separately.
Two adults and one paying child
€75 admission
€29 + €29 + €17. A child under six adds no standard zoo admission charge.
Two adults and two paying children
€92 admission
€58 for the adults and €34 for two children aged 6–18.
Two adults and three paying children
€109 in single tickets
Compare this group with the zoo's published family block product before buying individual admissions.
Family block product
€96 for the stated allocation
Two adult day tickets and three child day tickets, valid for one year from issue and usable individually.
For two adults and three children in the paying age band, €96 is €13 below the €109 single-ticket total. For two adults and two paying children, the €92 individual total is lower than €96 unless you will use the additional child ticket later. Match the allocation to your group and plans.
Online tickets and the ticket-office queue
The zoo sells standard day tickets online through its ticket partner. This can remove the need to join the ticket-purchase queue. You still need to follow the admission process, and popular viewing areas can be busy.
Concession products can have different purchase requirements. The zoo directs discounted-ticket purchases to its ticket offices, so check the qualifying documentation before choosing a full-price online ticket.
Check existing coverage before buying again
Schönbrunn Zoo is currently included with Vienna E-pass. If you already have a suitable pass, read the Schönbrunn Zoo entry instructions and prepare the required QR code rather than purchasing a second standalone admission.
A standard zoo ticket covers the zoo visit. Palace interiors, the Palm House, the Desert House and other paid Schönbrunn attractions need their own applicable ticket or combination coverage.
Schönbrunn Zoo Opening Hours: Check the Animal Houses Too
The zoo opens at 09:00 every day of the year, including public holidays. Closing changes with the season. The following published pattern is useful when choosing between a morning visit and an afternoon arrival.
January, November and December
09:00–16:30
A short winter day. Leave the morning available if you want a substantial visit.
February
09:00–17:00
Plan your indoor priorities before their earlier closing times.
March
09:00–17:30
A longer afternoon, with the same need to allow for the walk between habitats.
April–September
09:00–18:30
The longest regular opening period. A late start still leaves less time for a relaxed visit.
October before the clock change
09:00–17:30
This pattern applies until daylight saving time ends.
October after the clock change
09:00–16:30
The earlier closing time applies for the remainder of October.
Last entry is only part of the timing
Ticket-office closing and last admission are 30 minutes before zoo closing. Several indoor attractions finish earlier: the Bird House closes an hour before the zoo, most other animal houses half an hour before, while the Aquarium-Terrarium House and Tyrolean farmhouse follow the zoo's closing time.
A useful winter example: When the zoo closes at 16:30, the Bird House finishes at 15:30 and most other animal houses at 16:00. Arriving at the last-admission time leaves very little of the visit available.
Choose your arrival around the experiences you want, then work backward from their closing times. For more citywide planning, keep fixed admissions and opening days in mind when building your Vienna itinerary.
Getting to Schönbrunn Zoo and Choosing an Entrance
The zoo has three entrances. Choosing the right one matters because the Schönbrunn estate is large and the upper part of the zoo involves slopes.
Hietzing: our default for a zoo-first visit
Take the U4 underground to Hietzing. Enter the palace park through Hietzinger Tor, then follow the zoo signs along the route between the Palm House and Desert House.
This is the zoo's main entrance and a convenient starting point for the historic lower area. Allow time for the park approach; the underground exit is not the zoo admission gate.
Neptun: useful when coming from the palace gardens
The Neptun entrance is in the palace park near the Neptune Fountain. It can fit a palace-first day or a visit beginning with the formal gardens.
After a palace tour, follow the current garden signs toward the zoo instead of returning to the underground and starting over. Include the walk when arranging the gap between the two attractions.
Tirolergarten: an upper entrance with a steep approach
The upper entrance is near the Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg parking area and the Tyrolean part of the zoo. The zoo specifically warns that the descent toward its main historic area is very steep and unsuitable for wheelchair users.
Choose it only after considering the terrain and your planned arrival. A convenient parking address does not necessarily produce the easiest walking route for your group.
Arriving mainly for the zoo
Start with Hietzing
It gives a clear public-transport plan and a natural introduction to the main zoo area.
Finishing a palace visit
Consider Neptun
Use the entrance that fits your position in the gardens and your next zoo priorities.
Public transport is a practical option for most city stays. If you drive, check the exact parking conditions and restrictions rather than assuming the nearby spaces support a full-day visit.
Our Vienna transport guide helps connect the zoo with your accommodation and other sightseeing days.
How Long Do You Need at Schönbrunn Zoo?
Three to four hours is a useful first-visit allowance. It gives you room for selected habitats, one keeper session if it fits and a food or rest break. Your actual pace depends on the group, weather and time spent observing animals.
Around two hours
A focused highlights visit
Choose two or three priorities and keep to a compact part of the zoo. Leave the upper woodland and a long sit-down meal for another time.
Three to four hours
A balanced first visit
Combine several animal areas, a break and one optional session. This is our preferred starting plan.
Five hours or more
A slower family or animal-focused day
Allow for longer observation, play stops and a wider route. Keep the rest of the day light.
Zoo and palace interiors
Protect most of the day
Add palace admission, walking, meals and the journey from your hotel. Give each experience a clear time block.
A morning arrival gives you more choice before individual houses close. It also leaves room to adjust the route, revisit a favorite area or finish earlier if younger children have had enough.
Use the first few minutes to identify your top three interests on the current map. A family interested in pandas, penguins and a playground needs a different day from an adult visitor concentrating on primates and conservation displays.
Pandas and Animal Highlights at Schönbrunn Zoo
Choose a varied selection rather than making every enclosure compulsory. Animal visibility changes during the day, and time spent patiently watching can be more rewarding than immediately moving on.
A priority for many first visits
Giant pandas: Lan Yun and He Feng
The current giant pandas are female Lan Yun and male He Feng. They live in separate enclosures, as adult giant pandas are solitary animals. The modernized habitat includes indoor viewing, outdoor areas and places for the animals to retreat.
For a Hietzing start, make the panda area an early priority. Allow yourself time to look carefully instead of expecting a fixed performance. The zoo also identifies the Emperor's Pavilion as an additional panda-viewing perspective.
A different way to watch
Polar Bear World and the Polardom
Polar Bear World, also called Franz Josef Land, includes underwater viewing and the Polardom's information about polar habitats. Look for the different perspectives around the exhibit; an animal may be easier to observe from one position than another.
This is a useful choice when your group enjoys the combination of animals and interpretive displays. Build it into the route while the relevant indoor areas are open.
Water-level views and scheduled sessions
Penguins and sea lions
The Polarium includes penguin habitats and South American sea lions, with viewing areas that reveal movement in the water. The zoo's keeper schedule offers another way to shape a short part of the visit.
Check which species and location a session refers to. The published schedule distinguishes Humboldt penguins from northern rockhopper penguins, and several of these sessions do not run on Tuesdays.
Observe at a slower pace
Orangutans at the ORANG.erie
The ORANG.erie combines a historic building with indoor and outdoor orangutan areas. Give yourself a chance to notice movement, social behavior and the use of climbing structures.
The nearby café-restaurant and playground can make this a useful section of a family visit. Separate the animal-viewing time from the meal break so neither becomes something to rush through.
Keep space for personal favorites
Elephants, koalas, giraffes and big cats
You do not need an identical route to every other visitor. Use the map to locate the animal that matters most to your group and build a manageable circuit around it.
If elephants are a priority, the scheduled morning training may be of interest. If you prefer koalas or big cats, leave enough time in that part of the zoo and avoid arranging the day around several distant appointments.
Useful for a change of pace
Aquarium-Terrarium House
The aquarium and terrarium areas offer smaller-scale observation and an indoor contrast to the outdoor walk. They can suit a group that enjoys looking closely at aquatic animals and reptiles.
Use the current zoo map and access notices to confirm your route. The zoo currently lists this house among the facilities that remain open until the overall closing time.
Rainforest House status: At our October 23, 2026 check, the zoo's own habitat page still described renovation work and a forthcoming reopening. The visit plans below therefore use other indoor options. Confirm its current status before making it a priority.
Feeding Times and Keeper Sessions: Choose One Anchor
A keeper session can add a memorable pause, especially for children. Choose one that fits the surrounding route and arrive with enough time to find a viewing position.
The zoo publishes the following examples. These are subject to change or cancellation; use the current schedule on your visit day.
10:00
African elephants
Daily training session. The zoo explicitly describes this as training, not a feeding session.
10:30 and 15:30
South American sea lions
Published daily schedule except Tuesdays.
11:00 / 11:30
Two penguin sessions
Humboldt penguins at 11:00; northern rockhopper penguins at 11:30. Both are listed daily except Tuesdays.
14:00 / 16:00
Rhinos or koalas
Indian rhinos at 14:00 and Queensland koalas at 16:00 are listed daily.
Tuesday changes the plan. If sea lions or penguin sessions are the main reason for your visit, the published Tuesday exception matters. You can still build the day around the exhibits and other available sessions.
Keep movement time between stops. Trying to attend every session can produce more hurried walking than useful observation. One well-placed session is enough to give a half-day visit a focal point.
A Three-to-Four-Hour Schönbrunn Zoo Visit Plan
This suggested plan starts at Hietzing and keeps the main historic zoo area as its focus. It is a flexible sequence, not an official tour or a promise of animal visibility. Adjust it around the current map, open paths and your chosen keeper session.
09:00–09:40 · Arrive and settle in
Start with the pandas and nearby priorities
Enter, check the day's information and locate your three main interests. Spend the first part of the visit around the panda area, adding a nearby habitat if you have time. Keep a second panda look as an option for the way out.
09:40–10:30 · Choose one animal area
Elephants, big cats or another favorite
If the elephant training is your anchor, work toward that session. Otherwise use this block for an animal area that fits your route. Leave enough time to reach the next stop without rushing.
10:30–11:30 · Water habitats or a keeper session
Sea lions, penguins or Polar Bear World
Select the experience your group most wants. The morning sea-lion session can be an anchor on operating days. Use the rest of the block for a nearby exhibit rather than treating every published session as an appointment.
11:30–12:15 · Take a real break
Food, toilets and time off your feet
Choose a stop near your current location. Families may prefer a break near the ORANG.erie area; other visitors may enjoy the historic pavilion setting. Allow the pause to determine whether you want a longer afternoon.
12:15–13:00 · Finish with one choice
Orangutans, the aquarium or a favorite revisited
Choose one final area that fits the walk toward your exit. If children want a play stop, use the time for that. A focused finish makes it easier to leave with the group still enjoying the day.
To shorten the visit
Keep the pandas and two other priorities, choose a short snack break and skip a long circuit of the upper zoo. Do not try to turn the same number of stops into a faster race.
To stay longer
Add the Tyrolean area or more time at the habitats you enjoyed. Check the terrain and available energy before expanding the route. For a slower family day, an extra playground pause may be more useful than another distant animal.
Can You Visit Schönbrunn Palace and the Zoo in One Day?
Yes, provided you reserve enough of the day and keep the garden program selective. The palace, zoo and grounds share one estate, but they still require separate walking, admission arrangements and time.
Choose the experience that matters most first. A palace reservation creates a fixed commitment; the zoo's earlier winter closing can shape the available afternoon. Meals and transfers need their own space between the two.
Zoo first
Animals in the morning, palace later
Enter around opening time and give the zoo a clear half-day block. Leave time for lunch and the walk to a confirmed palace admission. This fits visitors who want the zoo to be the main experience.
Palace first
A booked interior visit, then the zoo
Use a suitable morning palace slot, take a break and continue through the gardens toward Neptun. Protect enough afternoon time before the zoo's animal houses close.
A garden walk can be the easier pairing
If the zoo takes most of your energy, enjoy a short palace-garden walk and see the palace exterior afterward. The main park paths provide a different pace without committing you to another substantial interior visit.
The Gloriette, maze, glasshouses and every garden corner do not all need to fit into the same day. Choose an extra that you particularly want and consider the slope, seasonal access and admission coverage.
Check the exact palace product
Different palace routes and combination tickets have different inclusions. Read the name of your booked product and its instructions; access to one palace experience does not establish access to every paid part of the estate.
Use our Schönbrunn Palace guide to choose the palace portion of the day. If booking through E-pass, check the current State Apartments attraction details separately from zoo entry.
Visiting Schönbrunn Zoo with Toddlers and Children
Build the day around the age and interests of the children traveling with you. A toddler's successful visit may involve a few animals, a meal and playtime. An older child may want to follow a particular species or attend a keeper session.
Choose three family priorities
Ask each child what they most want to see and mark a manageable selection on the map. If one habitat becomes the highlight, allow it extra time and shorten the rest.
Use the route to alternate walking and stationary stops. Food, toilets and somewhere to sit belong in the plan before anyone becomes exhausted.
Keep the terrain in mind with a stroller
The lower zoo area is the practical starting point for many families. Consider the steep upper approach before choosing Tirolergarten or adding a woodland extension. Check the current path conditions if you need a particular accessible route.
Leave scooters and balance bikes out of the zoo plan: the visitor rules prohibit them. Bring the mobility equipment you actually need for the children and plan around the zoo's permitted-use rules.
Make room for play
A playground stop can give younger children a welcome change of activity. Treat it as part of the visit rather than time you have somehow lost from the animal route.
Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Keep the group together at busy viewing areas and follow the instructions around every habitat.
Schönbrunn Zoo in Winter or Rain
The zoo stays open throughout the year. Winter changes the timetable and the balance between outdoor walking and indoor stops, so give yourself the morning when possible.
Winter: use the available daylight well
Plan the house visits before their earlier closing times, wear suitable layers and choose a warm meal or café break. A late-afternoon start leaves a much smaller experience than the same arrival time in summer.
Animal visibility varies with the conditions and the animals' choices. Keep a short selection of alternative habitats so the whole visit does not depend on one sighting.
Rain: plan the walks between indoor stops
Indoor viewing can provide welcome breaks, but the paths between buildings remain outdoors. Use a raincoat or suitable weather protection and keep the route compact.
Build the plan around houses confirmed open, such as the applicable aquarium, orangutan or polar-viewing areas. The Rainforest House's renovation status makes current facility information particularly useful.
If your group wants a more concentrated indoor animal attraction, compare the visit with Haus des Meeres. For other options, our rainy-day Vienna guide helps you adapt the rest of the trip.
Food, Facilities and Accessibility
Where to take a food break
The Emperor's Pavilion offers a historic setting in the center of the zoo. Café Restaurant ORANG.erie provides another useful stop near the orangutans and a children's playground. Choose according to your route and the current service available.
Check the actual menu and price before settling in. A quick snack and a full restaurant meal need different time and budget allowances. If you have allergies or dietary requirements, confirm suitable choices directly with the venue.
Leaving and coming back
For standard day tickets, the zoo describes same-day re-entry with a valid stamp obtained before leaving. If you plan a meal outside the perimeter, arrange the applicable re-entry permission with ticket staff first. Pass users should confirm how the rule applies to their admission.
Water and small bags
Carry a water bottle and use the facilities shown on the map. The zoo notes that its outdoor drinking fountains are unavailable in winter, so prepare accordingly.
Lockers are listed at the Hietzing information center, with a €1 deposit. Check the compartment before relying on it for a bag; a visitor locker is not guaranteed storage for every suitcase or piece of equipment.
Wheelchairs and accessible routes
Start by matching the entrance to your mobility needs. Hietzing is the useful default to assess, while the zoo warns against the steep descent from Tirolergarten for wheelchair users.
The zoo offers wheelchairs to borrow with advance arrangement through its information center. Contact it early to discuss availability, the required deposit documentation and your intended route. Confirm any access-related ticket concession before purchasing.
Use the current accessible facilities and path information rather than assuming every part of a large historic estate has identical access. Schedule breaks around the places that work for your group.
Photography and viewing
Private photography is permitted under the visitor rules without flash. Keep the viewing area comfortable for others, avoid tapping on glass and let the animals use their retreat spaces.
A Realistic Budget for a Family Zoo Visit
Separate the admission cost from meals, transport and optional extras. This makes it easier to compare a standalone day with a visit already covered by your sightseeing pass.
Standard admission
€92
Two adults at €29 and two children aged 6–18 at €17. This component uses the zoo's published day prices.
Example family meal allowance
€35–€60
An editorial allowance, not a quotation from a zoo restaurant. Adjust it to actual menus and your family's needs.
Example snacks and drinks
€10–€20
An optional planning allowance. What you bring and order will change the total.
Example total
€137–€172
Admission plus the stated meal and snack allowances, before transport, souvenirs or other Schönbrunn attractions.
For a family with children under six, replace the relevant €17 admissions with zero. For a different group, calculate using each person's applicable age category.
If zoo entry is covered by Vienna E-pass, avoid adding the standalone admissions again. Include the pass purchase in the budget for the wider trip and compare its total cost with the attractions you will actually visit.
Keep optional attractions optional
The Desert House stands outside the main zoo perimeter opposite the Palm House, with separate hours and admission. A palace interior, glasshouse or garden attraction can add both cost and time. Choose the experience first, then the ticket that covers it.
Plan Your Schönbrunn Zoo Visit with Vienna E-pass
The current Vienna E-pass zoo listing includes admission and instructs visitors to generate the QR code in their customer panel and present it at the entrance. Prepare that step before reaching the gate and follow any updated instructions attached to your pass.
Keep the zoo's opening hours, exhibit access and keeper program as separate planning details. Entry coverage gives you admission; the shape of the day still depends on your chosen route and available time.
If the zoo is your only planned paid attraction, use the standalone admission as the starting point for your comparison. If you are combining several participating experiences, assess the pass against the complete plan, including the correct prices for children.
Give the zoo a clear place in the trip
For many first visits, a zoo-and-garden day pairs well with a separate day of central Vienna sightseeing. Families can then enjoy different kinds of experiences without compressing everything into one afternoon.
Use our three-day Vienna itinerary as a starting structure, adapting it around your zoo priorities and any palace reservation. Choose a focused route, protect your breaks and finish with enough energy to enjoy the rest of Vienna.
