Arrival day, departure day and time between trains
Leave your bags. Enjoy your Vienna day.
An early arrival or a late departure can give you valuable time in Vienna. Choose luggage storage around your route, bag size and collection time, then explore without carrying your suitcase between stops.
You can store luggage in Vienna at Hauptbahnhof, Wien Mitte, other railway stations, central locker facilities and Vienna Airport. The best location is usually the one you can collect from easily before your next journey. Compare the complete price, internal locker dimensions and access hours before booking.
This guide explains the current digital lockers at Vienna's main station, city-centre options near Stephansplatz and Wien Mitte, airport storage charges and practical ways to organize the hours before check-in or after checkout.
Leaving by train
Your departure station
Hauptbahnhof can be convenient when you need to return there for your next train.

Terminal 3 storage
Airport storage can suit a city visit between flights when your bag is accessible to you.
Information checked on October 22, 2026. Prices are published operator references, not live availability. Confirm the current quote, dimensions, access hours and booking conditions for the exact facility. Suggested sightseeing patterns are planning examples.
Where Should You Store Luggage in Vienna?
Start with where you need to be afterward. A storage point next to your arrival station can be convenient, but it may create an unnecessary return journey if your departure is from somewhere else.
For example, someone arriving at Hauptbahnhof and leaving from the same station has a straightforward reason to use station lockers. Someone checking out of a central hotel before an evening flight should compare the hotel, a central facility and a location along the actual airport route.
Next, check the time at which you can retrieve your luggage. A low price has limited value if the counter closes before your evening activity finishes. Work backward from the train or flight, allowing for collection and the journey that follows.
Finally, compare the real storage space. A small backpack, a rigid cabin case and an expanded suitcase need different compartments. Measure the bag including wheels, handles and anything attached outside.
Use our Vienna transport guide to connect the storage location with your sightseeing and departure plans.
Vienna Hauptbahnhof Luggage Storage: What Has Changed?
Vienna Hauptbahnhof now uses modern digital lockers operated through Tamburi. ÖBB announced the replacement system in May 2026. Old advice about coin-operated lockers and a single €2–€4.50 station tariff should not be applied automatically to the main station.
The station's current service page places the lockers in the basement. Booking is available in advance or on site, with contactless payment and a personal collection code.

Useful details for your visit
Location: Basement level; follow the locker signs.
System: Digital lockers through Tamburi.
Payment: Contactless card payment.
Booking: Advance reservation or on-site booking.
Price: Confirm the amount shown for your selected size and duration.
The German signs to recognize are Schließfächer for lockers and Gepäckaufbewahrung for luggage storage. Save the location of the terminal you use so you can return to it directly.
For a short stopover, choose a sightseeing plan that brings you back comfortably before the onward train. Allow time to find the storage area, collect your belongings and reach the correct platform.
Digital Locker Sizes and Published Price References
The digital locker system uses sizes from S upward. The following internal dimensions are published in ÖBB's guidance; individual sizes depend on the location and available compartments. Dimensions below are height × width × depth.
Small items
S: 12 × 41 × 62 cm
A shallow compartment. Check the actual height of the item you want to store.
Smaller bags
M: 23 × 41 × 62 cm
Compare a backpack's packed thickness with the available height.
Travel bags
L: 47 × 41 × 62 cm
Check all three measurements, including rigid parts and wheels.
Larger luggage
XL: 71 × 41 × 62 cm
Useful to assess for a suitcase; the letter alone does not establish fit.
Very large luggage
XXL: 89 × 41 × 62 cm
The width and depth remain important even with the extra height.
Bulky items
3XL: check the location
ÖBB lists tall compartments of 200 or 214 × 41 × 62 cm. Availability varies.
Tamburi's published reference tariff
The operator's guidance lists the following three-hour and 24-hour rates. ÖBB directs customers to the booking process for the current price, so confirm the actual quote before payment.
Smaller compartments
S: €2 for 3 hours / €2.50 for 24 hours
M: €2.50 / €3
L: €3 / €4
Larger compartments
XL: €4 for 3 hours / €6 for 24 hours
XXL: €5 / €8
3XL: €6 / €12
A three-hour booking can become tight once you include the outward journey, the activity and the return. Choose the duration around the complete outing, rather than only the time spent inside one attraction.
Luggage Lockers at Westbahnhof, Meidling and Praterstern
ÖBB currently lists conventional luggage lockers at Wien Westbahnhof, Wien Meidling and Wien Praterstern. Its overview gives a storage period of up to 24 hours and the following reference prices.
Small and medium
Small: €2; 45 × 35 × 85 cm
Medium: €2.50; 60 × 35 × 85 cm
Large and jumbo
Large: €3.50; 90 × 35 × 85 cm
Jumbo: €4.50; 90 × 50 × 85 cm
These are the conventional-locker references, separate from the digital system at Hauptbahnhof and Wien Mitte. Check the equipment, payment instructions, available sizes and collection access at the actual station.
Choose one of these stations when it fits your journey. A trip to another station just to save a small amount can cost more time than it saves money. Westbahnhof can fit a day around Mariahilfer Straße; other locations should be assessed against your own route.
Luggage Storage in Vienna City Centre: Wien Mitte and Stephansplatz
Central storage can be useful when your main aim is a walking day. Check the exact address and operator: a location named after a station or square may be inside the station, on a nearby street or within another business.
Wien Mitte: distinguish the systems
ÖBB lists digital multifunctional lockers at Wien Mitte. Separately, CityLocker lists a facility at Landstraßer Hauptstraße 2. Compare the actual booking, size and access arrangements rather than assuming the two listings describe the same product.
CityLocker Landstraße
Landstraßer Hauptstraße 2
Published hours: 05:00–23:00.
Prices per locker: M €7.90, L €9.90, XL €11.90 per calendar day, ending at 23:00.
CityLocker Stephansplatz
Goldschmiedgasse 3
Published hours: 05:00–23:00.
Prices per locker: XS €4.50, S €5.90, M €7.90, L €9.90 per calendar day, ending at 23:00.
CityLocker charges per compartment and allows repeated opening during the booking period. Check the selected location's dimensions, current availability and quote. Keep the payment card and access details available.
A Stephansplatz-area facility can work for an Old Town and city-centre walk. Wien Mitte may fit a route toward Stadtpark or an onward connection, depending on the service you actually plan to use.
Vienna Airport Luggage Storage: Location, Hours and Prices
Vienna Airport's published baggage-storage service is in Terminal 3, with daily storage-service hours of 05:30–23:30. These are the hours to use when planning collection, even if another airport baggage service advertises different opening times.
Hand luggage: €5
Published price per piece, per calendar day.
Check-in luggage: €10
Published price per piece, per calendar day.
Safe: €8
Published price per safe, per calendar day.
Clothing unit: €3
Published price per clothing unit, per calendar day. This covers a coat or jacket with shoes, scarf and headgear.
Airport storage can suit travelers returning to the terminal after a city visit. If you are heading into Vienna for an overnight stay, a city location or your accommodation may avoid an extra airport journey just to retrieve the bag.
Allow time for the counter, your transfer and the airport procedures required for your flight. Ask how your item is classified and how the calendar-day charge applies if storage crosses into another date.
For transport planning, use our Vienna Airport to city centre guide. Check the current service for your travel date rather than relying on an old journey time.
Compare Per-Bag, Per-Locker and Calendar-Day Prices
The lowest starting price is useful only when it covers your actual luggage and the time you need. Compare the entire group and the complete storage period.
Per bag versus per compartment
At the airport's published rate, two pieces of check-in luggage total €20 for one calendar day. With a compartment-based service, several bags may share one booking if they fit and the operator permits it. Measure the packed bags before assuming one locker is enough.
Three hours, 24 hours and a calendar day
A three-hour rental is a short duration. A 24-hour rental runs according to its start and expiry conditions. A calendar-day product can end at a fixed time that evening: CityLocker's published daily period ends at 23:00.
Add the collection journey
A cheaper locker on the wrong side of your route can mean another ticket, a longer walk or less sightseeing time. Compare storage and travel together. For a final-day plan, the easiest collection point can be more useful than the smallest price difference.
How to Book and Collect from Digital Station Lockers
At Hauptbahnhof, follow the luggage option on the terminal, choose the compartment and duration, enter your email address and complete contactless payment. Save the collection details before closing the bag inside.
Tamburi's current guidance requires a valid email address and NFC-enabled payment. It recommends allowing around 20 minutes of buffer when time is tight. For collection at a location with several terminals, return to the terminal used for your booking.
Use the QR code or collection code according to the screen instructions. Remove every item and close the compartment afterward. Keep the confirmation accessible without depending on finding a new email at the last moment.
Reopening rules differ by operator
Tamburi describes a 15-minute reopening window after booking without ending the rental. CityLocker describes repeated access throughout the booked period. Check your specific booking before planning to return for a coat or charger midway through the day.
If a code or locker causes a problem
Use the support details attached to the facility or booking. Have the location, terminal, locker reference and payment confirmation ready. Build collection time into the itinerary so a technical issue does not immediately become a missed departure.
Where to Leave Luggage Before Check-in or After Checkout
Start by asking your own accommodation whether it can hold bags. Confirm the drop-off time, collection deadline, any charge and the arrangements for staffed access. An early room or late checkout is a separate request from luggage storage.
If the accommodation is conveniently placed, collecting there before departure can be simple. If it takes you away from the next journey, compare a station or central facility instead.
Apartment stays need particular attention to access arrangements. A building entrance code does not establish permission to leave luggage in a corridor or return after checkout. Arrange storage with the host or use a dedicated service.
For a partner business offering storage, check the actual opening hours and the booked address. The storage collection deadline may differ from a restaurant's last orders or a shop's advertised trading day.
Once the bags are settled, choose a first or final activity close enough to leave room for collection. Our Vienna Travel Guide can help you place the day within the wider trip.
Can You Leave Suitcases at Vienna Museums and Palaces?
A visitor cloakroom and a luggage-storage service provide different things. A venue may accept coats or small bags during a visit while refusing travel suitcases. Check the house rules for the actual item.
Belvedere: arrange suitcase storage elsewhere
Belvedere's published house rules say that luggage and larger items cannot be stored. Its tourism guidance points visitors toward their accommodation or station lockers for larger luggage. Free cloakroom or locker facilities for permitted items do not establish a suitcase-storage service.
Arrange the bag drop before a timed visit. Our Belvedere visitor guide helps with the museum portion of the day.
Schönbrunn: check the item and the facility
Schönbrunn's visitor information lists free lockers at the Group Center, using a four-digit code. Confirm that your item fits and that the access period suits the visit. The presence of visitor lockers does not guarantee space for every travel bag.
Read the Schönbrunn Palace guide when arranging the attraction visit, and keep storage and admission preparation as separate steps.
A railway lounge is not a bag-drop counter
ÖBB's lounge conditions direct travelers to station lockers. Staff do not undertake to watch bags left in the lounge. Plan a storage booking when you want to go out into Vienna.
Late Collection, Overnight Storage and 24-Hour Access
A 24-hour storage price does not automatically mean you can enter the facility at every hour of the night. Rental duration, building access and counter opening hours are separate conditions.
CityLocker publishes access until 23:00 at its listed central locations. Vienna Airport publishes baggage-storage service until 23:30. For railway facilities, confirm the access conditions for the storage area and your planned collection time.
If an evening event will finish late, collect first or arrange a facility with confirmed access for the hour you need. Apply the same logic to an early flight: a counter that opens after your planned departure cannot support a same-morning collection.
For several days of storage, obtain a quote for the entire period. The airport advertises longer-term storage, but a multi-day stay still needs a clear price and collection arrangement. With digital lockers, read extension and expiry conditions in the booking.
Three Practical Ways to Enjoy Vienna After Storing Your Bags
Keep the plan small enough to adapt to arrival delays and collection time. These examples are route ideas, not fixed transfer or admission schedules.
Arrive and depart at Hauptbahnhof
Store, visit one nearby highlight, return
Choose a suitable locker, then give one main experience your available time. The Belvedere area can fit a station-based outing, provided the timed visit, walking and collection all work. Have a meal or short walk before returning to the station with a comfortable buffer.
A central day after checkout
Old Town sights and an easy collection route
Use accommodation storage or a suitable central facility. Explore the historic center, have lunch and choose a scheduled activity only when its finish leaves time to retrieve the bags. A central experience such as Time Travel Vienna can be considered according to availability.
A city visit before returning to the airport
One compact district, then collect and depart
If you use airport storage, include the journey into Vienna and back in the time budget. If you use city storage, choose a facility convenient for the actual departure route. Leave room for collection, the transfer and the airport procedures required for your flight.
A short, enjoyable visit can be enough. Avoid adding another distant attraction when it makes the bag collection or onward journey tight.
What to Keep with You and What to Check Before Paying
Pack a small day bag with your travel documents, tickets, essential medication, phone and the items needed to retrieve the stored luggage. Include a charger or power bank if your access method relies on the phone.
Record the facility, entrance and booking reference. Check whether access uses a physical payment card, an email code or another method. Make sure the traveler who holds those details will be present at collection.
For families, measure folded strollers and other bulky items rather than assuming a large-size label guarantees fit. Ask about a reachable locker and the route to it if stairs, heavy lifting or wheelchair access are concerns.
Read the accepted-item and liability conditions for the service you choose. Select the size and duration you need, check the final amount and note the collection deadline before completing payment.
Plan Your Vienna Attractions Once the Bags Are Stored
Arrange storage as its own booking and budget item, then organize the sightseeing around the remaining time. Vienna E-pass can help you plan participating attractions, with each experience's reservation and entry instructions checked in advance.
For an arrival or departure day, one well-chosen visit can work better than several fixed appointments. Keep the final part of the day flexible and choose a route that returns you conveniently to the bags.
Make your first and last Vienna days count
Choose an experience that fits the time you have.
Explore participating attractions, confirm entry arrangements and leave enough time to collect your luggage comfortably.
